I’ve been working on an animation promoting Dommi Fresh as an artist. I decided to use Maya to make it, and made it octopus themed:

Creatures Music Video – Pattern Smile

Filed under: After Effects,Other Work — lynneliu @ 4:16 pm

I finally finished the music video with my lil creatures in! The song is a creature version of Pattern Smile that me and Yut recorded ages ago. I’m glad I made this in the end because it helped me get a bit more used to After Effects and also now I know a lil bit about how to use Logic!

My Mascot Creatures

Filed under: Other Work — lynneliu @ 8:59 pm

I’ve been designing some mascots for myself as a sort of signature for my work. I intend them to be sort of like the Hello Kitty franchise, where they are cute creatures that appear on everything such as desktop wallpapers and t-shirts. I also want to use them in a music video (where they are the band) and then use flash to create a website using them as the main theme. I feel the music video will have a sort of viral effect and make them more famous so that I can find out if they’re popular or not. I may also add my other works to this website, making it my personal website.

I’ve always been quite interested in elements such as fire, water, earth and air. So I decided to make this the theme of my creatures. This meant I had to make four of them, which I felt was a good number as I could create four distinctly different characters.

Here are two which I started off making (the fire and water one):

I decided that they looked too similar and that each creature needs distinctive features. So I changed them quite a lot. Looking back on them now, these ones do look quite awful.

Here are the improved ones:

I realised that the dark blue eyes clashed really badly with the orange skin, so I changed the eyes slightly and made them yellow. I also improved the wings to make them look more fiery. I gave him a mic too because he will be the singer of the band.

I felt the water one looked a lot better after I added watery features to him, such as the tail. I also felt it looked more effective when the markings were pale.

I then gave him a keyboard.

Next I made the earth and air creature and their corresponding instruments.

I felt it would be fun to make the earth creature play the drums by bouncing on them with his whole body.

I intend to have some interactive wallpapers that you can download off the website. By interactive I mean you need to complete a puzzle (such as a jigsaw puzzle) first before being able to download them. I also think it would be awesome to make the wallpapers themselves interactive once downloaded, like have different things happen depending on the position of the cursor on the desktop, but I have no idea how to do that.

So here the first four wallpapers I made: (I decided to make these four wallpapers relate to the element of each creature).

These desktop backgrounds are currently designed for macbook screen sizes (1280 x 800). I will make them available in 1024 x 768 and 1280 x 720. It seems there are so many different screen sizes nowadays…

The next step will be for me to animate them in After Effects to make the music video, so I need to draw them facing different directions, like to the side.

The next thing I need to do if plan the video and make a storyboard of some sort to help me visualize each scene. I have also been trying to get to grips with the Logic Pro, but there have been few problems with the sound, so it make take longer than I hoped to make the music track to go with the video. I intend the music to sound sort of like K.K Slider from Animal Crossing, because I feel this will work well with the characters. I also need to make a few more wallpapers as well as plan the layout of my site.

Illustrator

I decided to have a go at drawing in illustrator:

It’s not great for creating my natural style of drawing but it is quite good for producing smooth/slick looking images with block colouring.

Drawing!

Filed under: Other Work — lynneliu @ 11:33 pm

I suddenly got the urge to draw today. I haven’t drawn in so long. It was quite satisfying to be able to just draw whatever came to mind. I didn’t want to create something perfect, just a quick sketch. Mainly because if I aim for perfect it takes days as I’m a perfectionist and then I look at it for so long that I end up hating it.

This is the style I like drawing in most – it feels most natural to me:
